I have a few times been addressed questions about what really happened the first couple of years. A few days ago on Amino.dk (forum for entrepeneurs) I got a pretty weird comment that I’m running on borrowed feathers and I do not fuckin know what that means so let’s just hit some solid facts here ☺

In 2000 I sat in Oslo, had just come up there and did not know where I should call for a pizza. I went online to order one but I could not. I had a need, a pretty basic physical need if you look at Maslow’s needs pyramid and I could not even get it fullfilled on this relatively new revolutionary internet …

I began to create a business plan about being able to order food from fast food restaurants via the internet and also contacted some people who I thought would be super good to have on board as partners (Power of the mastermind) – It was the starting point to which we know today branded “Just-Eat.com”.

We established our parent (company) I chose to call the company “Invest IT A / S” on 18/01-2001. We had made a strategic agreement with Carlsberg and was starting to develop version 1 which was scheduled to be online by mid-year 2001 under the name foodzoom.dk.

Suddently we heard that a group was also about to start up the same concept, it was 4 persons whom 2 were on the payroll as I recall. PB, PDV, TM and CF. They had established their company roughly the same time (think there was 6 months intervals) and had Coca-Cola as a strategic partner and was also offline.

To be brief, we merged the 2 companies, 50/50%. We now had a comprehensive strategic agreement with Carlsberg / Coca-Cola, we chose to use our programming, and then asked 10,000 people through dating.dk which name it was best foodzoom.dk or just-eat.dk – it was just-eat. com who won so we took the name, logo and colors and put across our site. We were ready!

PB was installed as director and sole employee of their part of the camp. I, Per Meldgaard and Henrik Østergaard from our side (PB received 40,000 DKK in salary and we each got 12,000 DKK in salary). CF was involved in board meetings, PDV were working on some technology that never really went live I think, and TM I never met.

After approximately 1 year (Late 2002) we had an empty box (no money) and where heavily split in our thinking, so we bought PB, PDV, TM and CF out (over 2 times) and I was installed as director (the alternative was to close the company because we didnt have any money). We had 3 employees at the time and had been incredibly hard to have to spend energy on internal strife instead of kicking ass and give it maximum speed, and there was only approx. 200 orders a day. Much more positive energy from 2003 and after approx. 1 year began quietly to look better.

What we got out of all this trouble besides a cashier who was yawning empty?

Well we got a good contact with Coca-Cola. We got a name and logo, which was better than foodzoom.dk and so we got hair on your chest. I have chosen not to name the parties with the full name because I do not know whether they want this.

CONCLUSION:
Technically the Just-Eat company is not formed by me but by the group of people we merged with back in 2001 and then bought out after approx. 12 months Due to cooperation difficulties.
The idea and the infrastructure (ver 1 to ver. 6) are more or less created by myself and a small core group of innovators including management minus the logo and name.

When we agreed to buy our merger partners out we had a few hundred restaurants online and approx. 200 orders a day – for your information we are approx. 100 times bigger in orders anno 2009 when you look at Just-Eat.com.
When we agreed to buy our merger partners out we had 3 employees on the payroll – now we are about. 200 spread over not just 1 market but 7 markets.

So when I see comments like that I’m running on borrowed feathers and not the real founder of Just-Eat all I can say is one thing: B U L L S H I T! I can not remember that there was some beside me at the Coca-Cola mattress which I more or less sleept at in the office from 2001 to 2003. I dont remember that other former partners was sitting beside me in the late evening hours day in and day out from 2001-2008.

I would like to take this opportunity to credit the following for the first years in the DK and the first year in the UK – These individuals have been a big part of everyone else’s opportunity for a great job in a great company (in random order, of course):

1. Per Meldgaard (CTO from 2000-2005) to have been one of the triangle between Henrik Ostergaard and myself – without Per we had in fact not had an online site and secondly Henrik Ostergaard and I have probably killed each other ☺ – Per and I are currently in the process with project no. 2 (online july 2010) ☺

2. Henrik Østergaard (Sales Director from 2000-2005) to have an extreme ability to sign restaurants and get them to stay even though they where very angry of no orders the first 3-4 years. In addition, a thank you for a good friendship over the past 17 years – a friendship that lasts the entire life.

3. Carsten Mikkelsen (Shareholder from 2000-present) without Carsten we were bankrupt back in 2001-2003. As a young kid you need role models and he was probably one for all of us. A great mentor who was able to motivate so much that we would only order a single ticket to the meeting with him because we could fly home ourselfs (Moreover, we could not afford a return;)).

4. Hans C. Meier Hansen (Chairman / affiliated Just-Eat.dk 2001-Now) Former business director in Sydbank and a man I have extreme respect for. Sometimes regarded as my second father. With his cool and calm nature, he has led us all through both corporate and personal internal struggles and challenges towards the goal. Through Just-Eat I now understand the meaning of always making sure to have an outside board position(s).

5. Flemming Sneftrup, Ivan Nielsen and Tina Andresen (Accountants 2000-NOW) I have now found out how structured and talented they are so that we could keep full focus on the operations of the company. I thought all audit / accounting firms worked like that. No follow-up – it just works but thats not the case most places outside the arms of Account ApS. Tina (Miss Just-Eat.dk) handled the order no. 1 in just-eat s history.

6. Rune Risom (All Round 2002-present) As the first “official” person in customer care, right hand and lieutenant for me in all areas . have been given full throttle with “whatever it takes” commitment. For having invented one of the good revenue streams and for having taken over UK and helped me with the start overthere (Once again we had to sleep on sofas a long time – damn !). For beeing a good friend who goes back to when we hooked up to produce music in 1999 through traxinspace.com.

7. Rasmus Ibsen (2003 to now) and Ole Gade (2005 to now) – developers through fire and water. What we’ve been through together around technical challenges dosnt exist. Great commitment and mutual respect. I would also like to thank Kristian Erbou (2002-2004) who, despite enormous pressure handled the site from ver 2 to 3 at a time when he should be secretary as well (as Rasmus sometimes had to be – crazy).

8. Matthias Løwe (2003-Now) Sales – indeed Just-Eat history’s first full-time employee in its new company structure in late 2002. Matthias and I have had many long nights out at restaurants, but it has always been a fun experience. Matthias is a real ”pearl fisherman” who can get everyone laughing. Matthias has a special ability, like Henrik, to turn very angry restaurateurs to good friends again.

9. Morten Larsen (2005-present) – One of the most hard-core business mind I have ever met. Morten took over my position as captain for just-eat.dk and ran this at extreme satisfaction. His mindset is more or less identical to my own vs. Attitudes and he is now one of my absolute best friends. Morten is one of the people I trust with my life.

10. Jacob Clausen (2003-NOW) – was employed as a Customer Care under careful consideration – but fucking hell … probably one of Just-eat ‘s biggest ”fan”. Started sleeping at the office in Vejle for 6 months before he found his own apartment. The structures and processes are strictly followed by “Mr. Spread Sheet “. If Jacob is responsible for specific processes you should not be afraid.

11. David Buttres (2006-Now) – Ex. Sales in the UK and now Director of the UK – As I sat in an empty room in the UK and had my first meeting with Coca-Cola, it was David who was their representative – I got him headhunted – freaking kick-ass guy – him and I assembeled the first chairs at the office in the UK. I was back office and marketing and setting up all the processes and David were out to selling to restaurants .. I remember that I began talking to myself at a time when I had been more or less alone for 3 months in order to build the UK business (Scary). It was at the office 9 in the morning and at home 21 in the evening – I was in the UK to prove that I could do it again. Anyway back to David – There are few people on this planet I trust with my life .. David is one of them – through fire and water – a friendship that stays the rest of my life.

And YES … there will be a book about the Just-Eat history … But the Just-Eat story is for me not finished yet so let’s just wait for it – The first 100 pages however have already been written so do not worry about that

DANISH VERSION:

Jeg har nogle få gange fået rettet spørgsmål om hvad der egentligt skete de første par år. Jeg har også for nogle dage siden på Amino fået en ret underlig kommentar om at jeg ikke er den rigtige stifter og jeg kører på lånte fjer og jeg ved fandme ikke hvad så lad os lige slå nogle facts fast her ☺

I 2000 sad jeg i Oslo, var lige kommet derop og vidste ikke hvor jeg skulle ringe efter en pizza. Jeg gik på nettet for at bestille en men det kunne man ikke. Jeg havde et behov, et ret basalt fysisk behov jf. Maslows behovspyramide og jeg kunne ikke engang få det dækket på det her relativt nye revolutionerende internet…

Jeg gik i gang med at lave en forretningsplan om det at kunne bestille sin mad fra fast food restauranter via internettet og kontaktede ligeledes nogle mennesker som jeg mente ville være super gode at have med i det her (Power of the mastermind) – Det var startskuddet til det som man i dag kender under brandet ” Just-Eat.com ”.

Vi etablerede vores moderselskab som jeg valgte at kalde for ”Invest IT A/S” den 18/01-2001. Vi fik lavet en strategisk aftale med Carlsberg og var godt i gang med at programmere version 1 som efter planen skulle være online midt på året 2001 under navnet foodzoom.dk.

Så skete der det at vi pludseligt hørte at en gruppe ligeledes var i gang med at starte samme koncept op, det var 4 mand hvoraf de 2 var på lønningslisten så vidt jeg husker. PB, PDV, TM og CF. De havde etableret deres selskab nogenlunde på samme tid (mener der var 6 mdr. Mellemrum) og havde Coca-Cola som strategisk samarbejdspartner og var ligeledes offline.

For at fatte mig i korthed skete der så det at vi fusionerede de 2 selskaber 50/50%. Vi havde nu en samlet strategisk aftale med Carlsberg / Coca-Cola, vi valgte at bruge vores programmering og spurgte så 10.000 mennesker igennem dating.dk hvilket navn man fandt bedst foodzoom.dk eller just-eat.dk – det var just-eat.dk der vandt så vi tog navn,logo og farvevalg og lagde henover vores site. Så var vi klar !

PB blev indsat som direktør og eneste ansat fra deres del af lejren. jeg, Per Meldgaard og Henrik Østergaard fra vores side (PB fik 40.000 dkk i løn og vi fik hver 12.000 dkk i løn). CF var med til opfølgnings- og bestyrelsesmøder, PDV sad og arbejdede på noget teknologi som vidst egentligt aldrig blev til noget og TM tror jeg aldrig jeg mødte.

Efter ca 1 år (Ultimo 2002) var kassen tom og holdningerne splittet og vi købte PB, PDV, TM og CF ud (over et par omgange) og jeg blev indsat som direktør (alternativet var at lukke selskabet). Vi var 3 ansatte på det tidspunkt og det havde taget utroligt hårdt at skulle bruge energi på interne stridigheder i stedet for at sparke røv og gi den max gas og der gik kun ca. 200 ordrer ind om dagen. Langt mere positiv var vi så fra og med 2003 og efter ca. 1 år begyndte det stille og roligt at se pænt ud.

Hvad fik vi ud af alt det ballade udover en kasse der var gabende tom ?

Well vi fik en god kontakt til Coca-Cola. Vi fik et navn og logo som var bedre end foodzoom.dk og så fik vi hår på brystet. Jeg har valgt ikke at nævne parterne med fulde navn da jeg ikke er klar over om de ønsker dette.

KONKLUSION:
Rent teknisk er Just-Eat selskabet ikke stiftet af undertegnede men af den gruppe mennesker som vi fusionerede med tilbage i 2001 og derefter købte ud efter ca. 12 mdr. Pga samarbejdsvanskeligheder.
Ideen og infrastrukturen (ver. 1 til ver. 6) er mere eller mindre skabt af undertegnede og en lille kerne af innovatorer herunder management – logo + navn + farver lagt henover.

Da vi blev enige om at købe vores fusionerede partnere ud havde vi nogle få hundrede restauranter online og ca. 200 ordrer om dagen – til orientering går der ca. 100 gange flere ordrer ind anno 2009 jf. Just-Eat.com .
Da vi blev enige om at købe vores fusionerede partnere ud havde vi 3 ansatte på lønningslisten – nu er vi ca. 200 fordelt på ikke bare et marked men 7 markeder.

Så når jeg ser jantelovskommentarer som at jeg kører på lånte fjer og ikke er den rigtige stifter af Just-Eat kan jeg kun sige en ting: I kan da skide i havet !!! Jeg kan ikke huske at der lå nogle ved siden af mig på den Coca-Cola madras som jeg mere eller mindre sov på på kontoret fra 2001 til 2003. Jeg mindes heller ikke at der sad andre tidligere partnere ved siden af mig i de sene aften timer dag ud og dag ind fra 2001-2008.

Jeg vil gerne benytte lejligheden til at creditere følgende for de første år i DK og det første år i UK – Disse personer har været en stor del af alle andres mulighed for et fantastisk job i en fantastisk virksomhed (I random rækkefølge naturligvis):

1. Per Meldgaard (CTO fra 2000-2005) for at have været tredieben imellem Henrik Østergaard og undertegnede – uden Per havde vi for øvrigt ikke haft et online site og for det andet havde Henrik Østergaard og jeg slået hinanden ihjel – jeg er i dag i gang med mit projekt no. 2 netop med Per ☺

2. Henrik Østergaard (Salgs direktør fra 2000-2005) for at have en ekstrem evne til at få koblet restauranter på OG få dem til at blive selvom de er skide sure over at der ikke kom nogle ordrer de første 3-4 år. Derudover en tak for et godt venskab de sidste 17 år – et venskab der holder hele livet.

3. Carsten Mikkelsen (Aktionær fra 2000-NU) uden Carsten var vi gået konkurs tilbage i 2001-2003. Uden Carsten havde vi slået hinanden ihjel inden vi havde fået success. Som ung knægt skulle man have forbilleder og han blev vel nok vores alles forbillede. En mentor af rang som gjorde at vi kun skulle bestille en enkelt billet til mødet med ham for vi kunne selv flyve hjem så motiverede var vi (Desuden havde vi heller ikke råd til en retur;)).

4. HC Mejer Hansen (Bestyrelsesformand/tilknyttet Just-Eat.dk 2001-NU) Tidligere erhvervschef i Sydbank og en mand jeg har ekstrem respekt for. Til tider betragtet som min reserve far. Med hans kølige og rolige væsen har han ledet os alle sammen igennem både selskabs- personlige og interne stridigheder og udfordringer frem mod målet. Jeg har igennem Just-eat forstået meningen med altid at sørge for at have en ekstern bestyrelses post.

5. Flemming Sneftrup, Ivan Nielsen og Tina Andresen (Revisorer 2000-NU) Jeg har i dag fundet ud af hvor strukturerede og dygtige de er så vi kunne holde fuld fokus på driften af selskabet. Jeg troede alle revisions/bogholderi selskaber arbejdede sådan. Ingen opfølgning – det spiller bare. Tina ( miss Just-Eat.dk ) har håndteret ordre no. 1 i just-eat s historie.

6. Rune Risom (All round 2002-NU) Som første ”ansat” i customer care og tro væbner og løjtnant for mig på alle områder har givet den gas med ”whatever it takes” commitment. For at have opfundet en af de gode tunge revenue streams og for at have taget over til UK og hjulpet mig med opstarten (Endnu engang skulle vi sove på sofaer i lang tid – god damn). For at være en god ven som går helt tilbage til da vi hookede op for at producere musik i 1999 via traxinspace.com.

7. Rasmus Ibsen (2003 til NU) og Ole Gade (2005 til NU) – udviklere igennem ild og vand. Hvad vi ikke har været igennem sammen af tekniske udfordringer det findes ikke. Fantastisk commitment og gensidig respekt. Jeg vil også gerne sige tak til Kristian Erbou (2002-2004) som trods enormt pres håndterede sitet fra ver 2 – 3 i en tid hvor han også skulle være sekretær (ligesom Rasmus til tider har skullet være – hold da op).

8. Matthias Løwe (2003-NU) Sælger – faktisk Just-eat historiens første fuldtids ansatte i dennes nye konstruktion i slutningen af 2002. Matthias og jeg har haft mange lange aftner ude hos restauranterne men det har altid været en fed og sjov oplevelse. Matthias er en rigtig perlefisker som kan få alles smil på læben. Matthias har en særlig evne til, ligesom Henrik, at vende rigtigt sure restauratører til gode venner igen.

9. Morten Larsen (2005-NU) – En af de mest over all hard core forretningsfolk jeg har mødt nogesinde. Morten overtog min position som kaptajn for just-eat.dk og har kørt dette til ekstrem tilfredsstillelse. Hans mindset er mere eller mindre identisk med mit eget ift. Holdninger og så er han i dag en af mine absolut bedste venner. Morten er en af de mennesker jeg stoler på med mit liv.

10. Jacob Clausen (2003-NU) – Blev ansat som Customer Care under nøje overvejelser – men fucking hell… Nok en af Just-eat ´s største ”Firmaets mænd”. Startede med at sove på kontoret i Vejle i 6 mdr. Før han fandt sin egen lejlighed. Just-eat.dk s struktur og processer er skarpt blevet fulgt af ”Mr. Spread Sheet”. Såfremt Jacob har ansvaret for specifikke processer skal man ikke være bange for at det ikke spiller.

Salgsdirektør i UK og nu Direktør i UK – Da jeg sad i et tomt lokale i UK og havde mit første møde med Coca-Cola var det David der var deres repræsentant – jeg fik headhuntet ham– freaking kick ass – ham og jeg samlede selv stolene på kontoret i UK hvorefter jeg tog backoffice og David var ude at sælge til restauranterne.. jeg kan huske at jeg begyndte at tale med mig selv på et tidspunkt da jeg havde siddet mere eller mindre alene i 3 mdr. For at bygge det op (Scary). Det var på kontoret kl. 9 og hjem kl. 21 til en fed fed lejlighed men der var sgu ikke nogle til at tage imod mig derhjemme…haha… lige meget – jeg var i UK for at bevise at jeg kunne gøre det en gang til. Nå men tilbage til David – Der er få mennesker på denne klode jeg stoler på med mit liv.. David er en af dem – igennem ild og vand – et venskab der holder resten af mit liv.

Og JA… der kommer en bog om Just-Eat ´s historie… Men Just-Eat ´s historie er for mit vedkommende ikke færdig endnu så lad os lige vente med det – De første 100 sider er dog allerede skrevet så bare rolig.

Last week I was sitting at Index Ventures in London – Index Ventures is one of the world’s largest venture capital companies and has invested in companies such as Skype, Betfair, Lovefilm and many more of the really big successes – they are huge and super competent and guess what – Just-Eat (my “child”) just got fed 92 million. DKK from Index Ventures for future growth … It is just too damn fantastic

One of the big boys at Index Ventures said to me “It is very hard to find entrepeneurs with the DNA like yours, therefore we would really love to see more projects from you”. “Entrepeneur DNA” I thought it was such delicious words that I wanted to try to understand the formula for the “(optimal) Entrepreneurial DNA”.

How should an entrepreneur’s DNA actually be in order to get succeed. What is it that actually makes the difference between success and failure, or even medio success vs. Big time exit. Why do some succeed vs. Others struggling for existence? what is the secret of the DNA ?

I can try to tell what I did / do and how I think in my daily work.

Let’s start with 3 key terms:

1. POWER OF THE MASTER MIND
2. THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
3. THE GAME OF INCHES

These 3 key terms I live for, these 3 terms, I try to master in my everyday life – these 3 terms if they are practiced correctly, is an (optimal) initiates DNA to success if you ask me …

1. POWER OF THE MASTER MIND
Let us be honest with each other, an entrepreneur is 99.9% of all cases driven by a goal called MONEY. Energy (POWER) is the main characteristic of accumulation of cash, without energy you will get nowhere. Business plans, objectives and implementation of both are worthless without a lot of energy to create action.

If you have the energy, combined with extreme knowledge of the market you work in or around, you are ready to coordinate the energy and knowledge with one or more which like you have a massive energy and knowledge – you are creating Power of the Mastermind because you TOGETHER are 3 times as efficient as if you were alone. It is a bit cryptic? well – let’s go back in my own world.

In 2000 I sat in Oslo and worked as a trainee at the Danish Embassy (Commercial Division) – I had just come up there and at some point I wanted a pizza but did not know where I could call and order one. I went on the internet but could not find a place where I could order my pizza – studied the danish market for ordering pizza, and found nothing.

I can feel if something feels right – “feel if something feels right!” Forget it … I can feel the energy already there which will be built up inside, an energy which makes me motivated to do a business plan, objectives, goals and later to explode in Action and the accumulation of cash. Have you had that feeling in your stomach that something felt “right”? if you have it then it is only YOU holding back NOT to get started with your project, lack of energy, which in turn means that your entrepreneurial DNA is not yet in place.

I began to create a business plan on the idea that today is known as Just-Eat.com and wanted to find out how I could get beyond the steps of success without having to stress over the things I could not figure out of – nobody is good at everything right ! – as I always say “Better to have 25% of a huge success than 100% of a failure”.

I stressed about how to do the bookkeeping, I stressed about how I could enter the market without it costing a fortune and with a sales rate that was satisfactory, I stressed about not being able to find out to program a site, I had received some offers from companies who can program for me but unfortunately also send a huge bill afterwards, I stressed about not having much money for marketing, yes indeed, I had barely enough money to pay my rent.

All the stressors would have helped to break down my energy if I had not decided to give a part of my future business to others who might be good for all the things that stress me! wooow … do you get it? Could it be that we should look around to find some great partners?

I contacted Carsten Mikkelsen, who was a partner (Crazy Daisy / Buddy Holly) and through this we where able to make a strategic agreement with Carlsberg (Coca Cola). I had a partner who had a site with 400,000 users at the time of our segment and they went all in doing marketing against a share. I got contacted a good friend and super salesman who was out in the field. I made a partnership with an accountant who did the accounts and I had a partner who could program the site. Now we were 6 individuals each with our expertise, all with lots of good energy and all with one common goal – SUCCESS – no, I did not have 100% ownership of the company – in fact only 31% left, but hey … I’m not complaining today … Without me knowing it (at that time) I had created a Power of the Mastermind.

2. THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
Many of the most successful business leaders say that the secret to success is your ability to attract, whatever comes to you is your own ability to ensure that it actually comes to you.
Why do you think that 1% of the world’s population earn 96% of all money being earned on this planet, do you think it is a coincidence? It is no coincidence, it was designed that way.

To put it real simple – THOUGHTS – MAKES – THINGS. Many over the years has said to me “You are so lucky” … BULLSHIT, it’s not a damn thing to do with luck – I do not believe in luck, yes, if you win 10 million. in the lottery – that is probably the only luck in this world – I believe that everything comes to you because you, consciously or unconsciously, seeking there – THOUGHTS – MAKES – THINGS.

Let me put you into my world and how I do it. I always makes targets and milestones in life, I’ve always done and will always continue to do so. I write it down simply so I see it every day.

It sounds crazy but in my bathroom theres a framework with the goal I am after, and every day I see my goal several times – every time I look at my calendar I see the same goal, because in my calendar, I have also written it down, I have even been painted a picture that is above my bed – the picture shows a rowing boat with 5 people and each time I look at the picture I remember that one is not stronger than its weakest link and that together we build (POWER OF THE MASTER MIND).

You become what you think at most but you also attract what you think at most, think of yourself as a magnet. Every time you are together with people be sure to “burn through”. Every time you are with people dont think “what can I get out of him/her now” instead make sure that there is created a positive link between the person and you with a lot of good energy, it WILL come back to you.

Carsten Mikkelsen, who was the first I spoke to about Just-Eat said something really interesting to me many years after our first meeting, a decisive proof of the law of attraction, he said: “Jesper, when I came into the office in Oslo and heard about your idea I really did not know what the hell you were talking about … food on the Internet, you gotta be crazy, how! But you burned through so much to me that I simply had to be business partner with you “.. think of yourself as a MAGNET …

3. THE GAME OF INCHES

What a lot of fancy English words eh ! … well – I’ll tell you what I mean by INCHES. I am sure that the reason for Just-Eats success was that there was a lot of people who had a perfectionist attitude to things and that nothing was good enough until it was perfect. Many will probably say: “arrhhh calm now, I do not think your site is perfect.”

No, probably not – but we are the best in our field and we will only keep being best if we do not compromise on anything.

I am not lying when I say that I more or less sleept in the office the first 3 years – no shit – I even slept on a Coca-Cola mattress I had been sponsored. I lived and breathed for Just-Eat and worked from morning to late night every night. In the weekend we shared customer care, because we could not afford to hire some people to take care of it. It was hard but it was too fuckin funny.

I kept pushing myself – a good idea is to use 10 min. Every night before going to bed to write your own personal daily report of all the ACTIONS you made during the day. Only ACTIONS, cause talking bullshit to your self your company will get nowhere with. What I learned about myself was that I got a bad conscience if I ON WRITING was noted that it was small with action on that day, which in turn meant that the next day I gave it more throttle and created many more ACTIONS — and it repeats itself every day. nice one….

An optimal entrepreneurial DNA has the ability to push himself and keep himself running in a gear that nobody else can join in – why? because the optimal entrepreneurial DNA knows that small differences count – THE GAME OF INCHES.

I believe that if you REALLY want to be build big business in this world then you have to spend 70 hours per week the first 3 years, “one inch at a time” – it is simply necessary, because otherwise you do not make a difference in this world and you will be overtaken by competitors, we can not have that can we

I will give you the pep talk now that I read – I have simply put in my calendar that I must read it every 14. day:

I sidste uge var jeg til møde hos Index Ventures i London – Index Ventures er et af verdens største Venture Capital selskaber og har investeret i selskaber som SKYPE, Betfair, Lovefilm og mange flere af de helt store succeser – De er kæmpe store og super kompetente og guess what – Just-Eat (mit ”barn”) har lige fået tilført 92 mio. DKK fra Index Ventures til fremtidig vækst… Det er sgu da bare for fantastisk ☺

En af de tunge drenge hos Index Ventures sagde til mig ”It is very hard to find an entrepeneur with the DNA like yours, therefor we would really love to see more projects from you”. ”Entrepeneur DNA” eller på dansk ”Iværksætter DNA” syntes jeg var så lækre ord at jeg gerne ville prøve at forstå formlen på den såkaldte ” (optimale) Iværksætter DNA”.

Hvordan skal en iværksætters DNA være for at få succes. Hvad er det der rent faktisk gør forskellen imellem succes og fiasko, eller bare middelmådig succes ift. Big time exit. Hvorfor brager nogle folk frem ift. Andre der f.eks. kæmper for eksistens ? hvad er hemmeligheden på den DNA som der skal til ?

Jeg kan forsøge at fortælle hvad jeg gjorde / gør og hvordan jeg tænker i mit daglige virke.

Lad os starte med 3 key terms:

1. POWER OF THE MASTERMIND
2. THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
3. THE GAME OF INCHES

Disse 3 key terms lever jeg efter, disse 3 terms forsøger jeg at mestre i min hverdag – disse 3 terms, såfremt de bliver udøvet korrekt, er en (optimal) iværksætters DNA til succes hvis du spørger mig…

1. POWER OF THE MASTERMIND
Lad os nu være ærlige overfor hinanden, en iværksætter er i 99,9% af alle tilfælde drevet af et mål som hedder PENGE. Energi (POWER) er den vigtigste egenskab for akkumulering af den pengestrøm, uden energien kommer du ingen vegne. Business planer, målsætninger og iværksættelse af begge er værdiløse uden masser af ENERGI til at skabe action.

Har du den energi kombineret med ekstrem viden om det marked du arbejder i eller omkring er du klar til at koordinere den energi og viden med en eller flere andre som ligesom du har en massiv energi og viden  – derved skabes POWER OF THE MASTERMIND fordi at i SAMMEN bliver 3 gange så effektive som hvis man var alene. Er det lidt kryptisk ? well – lad os gå tilbage i min egen verden.

I 2000 sad jeg i Oslo og arbejdede som trainee på den Danske Ambassade i  (Handelsafdelingen) – Jeg var lige kommet derop og på et tidspunkt ville jeg have en pizza men vidste ikke hvor jeg skulle ringe hen. Jeg gik på nettet men kunne heller ikke her finde et sted hvor jeg kunne bestille min pizza – undersøgte DK markedet for bestilling af pizza og fandt ingenting.

Jeg er sådan indrettet at jeg kan mærke hvis noget føles rigtigt – ”Mærke hvis noget føles rigtigt !!!” glem det… det jeg kan mærke er en energi der allerede her bliver bygget op indvendigt, en energi som får mig motiveret til at lave en business plan, målsætninger og som senere skal eksplodere i ACTION og akkumulering af pengestrøm. Har du haft den følelse i maven at noget føltes ”rigtigt” ? hvis du har det så er det eneste der bremser dig for IKKE at komme i gang med projektet din manglende ENERGI, som igen betyder at din iværksætter DNA endnu ikke er på plads.

Jeg gik i gang med at lave en business plan på den ide der i dag kendes som Just-Eat.com og ville finde ud af hvordan faen jeg kunne komme ud over stepperne med succes uden at skulle stresse over de ting jeg IKKE kunne finde ud af – ingen er gode til alt husk nu det – som jeg altid siger ”Hellere have 25% af en kæmpe succes end 100% af en fiasko”.

Jeg stressede over hvordan man nu gør ”alt det der” med regnskab, jeg stressede over hvordan jeg kunne komme ind på markedet uden at det kostede en ”bondegård” og med en salgs frekvens som var tilfredsstillende, jeg stressede over ikke at kunne finde ud af at programmere et site på nettet, jeg havde jo fået nogle tilbud fra selskaber der kunne programmere for mig men desværre også sende en kæmpe regning bagefter, jeg stressede over ikke at have mange penge til marketing, ja faktisk havde jeg knap nok penge til at betale min husleje.

Alle de stress faktorer ville have været med til at nedbryde min ENERGI hvis ikke jeg havde besluttet mig for at afgive dele af min kommende forretning til andre som måske var gode til alle de ting der stressede mig ! wooow… do you get it ? kunne det tænkes at man skulle kigge sig omkring for at finde nogle fantastiske partnere ?

Jeg tog kontakt til Carsten Mikkelsen som blev partner (Crazy Daisy / Buddy Holly) og ved hjælp af energi fik lavet en strategisk aftale med Carlsberg (Coca-Cola). Jeg fik en partner som havde et site med dengang 400.000 brugere i vores segment som gav den gas med marketing mod en andel. Jeg fik taget kontakt til en rigtig god ven og supersælger som skulle ud i marken. Jeg fik lavet et partnerskab med en revisor som lavede regnskabet og jeg fik en partner som kunne programmere sitet. Nu var vi 6 individer med hver vores kompetence, alle med masser af god energi og alle med fælles målsætning – NEJ, jeg havde ikke 100% ejerandel af selskabet – faktisk kun 31% tilbage, men hey… jeg klager ikke i dag… Uden jeg vidste det (dengang) havde jeg etableret en POWER OF THE MASTERMIND.

2. THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
Mange af de mest succesfulde virksomhedsledere siger at hemmeligheden for succes er din evne til tiltrækning, alt hvad der kommer til dig er din egen evne til at sørge for at det rent faktisk kommer til dig.
Hvorfor tror du at 1% af verdens befolkning tjener 96% af alle penge der bliver tjent på denne klode, tror du det er et tilfælde ? Det er ikke et tilfælde, det er designet på den måde.

Det kan siges meget simpelt egentligt – TANKER – BLIVER – TIL. Mange har igennem årene sagt til mig ”Hvor er du bare heldig”…BULLSHIT, det har ikke en skid med held at gøre – jeg tror ikke på held, jo, hvis man vinder 10 mio. i lotto – det er nok det eneste der er heldigt her i verden – jeg tror på at alt kommer til dig fordi at du, bevidst eller ubevidst, søger derhen – TANKER – BLIVER – TIL.

Lad mig sætte dig ind i min verden og hvordan jeg gør det. Jeg sætter mig altid nogle mål og delmål her i livet, det har jeg altid gjort og vil altid blive ved med det. Jeg skriver det simpelthen ned så jeg ser det hver dag.

Det lyder skørt men på mit badeværelse er der en ramme med det mål jeg går efter og hver gang jeg er i bad så ser jeg mit mål – hver gang jeg kigger i min kalender så ser jeg det samme mål, for i min kalender har jeg ligeledes skrevet det ned, jeg har sågar fået malet et billede som er over min seng – på billedet ser man en robåd med 5 mennesker og hver gang jeg ser på det billede så husker jeg på at man ikke er stærkere end det svageste led og at vi sammen skal i mål (POWER OF THE MASTERMIND).

Du bliver det du tænker mest på men du tiltrækker også det du tænker mest på, tænk på dig selv som en magnet. Hver gang du har med mennesker at gøre skal du sørge for at brænde igennem. Hver gang du har med mennesker at gøre skal du ikke se på dem som en gevinst her og nu men sørge for at der bliver skabt en positiv kobling imellem vedkommende og dig for på et tidspunkt, hvis du har givet god energi, kommer den tilbage til dig.

Carsten Mikkelsen som var den første jeg talte med omkring Just-eat, har her mange år efter vores første møde sagt noget rigtigt interessant, et afgørende bevis for law of attraction, han sagde: ”Jesper, da jeg kom op på kontoret i Oslo og hørte om din ide fattede jeg egentligt slet ikke hvad fanden det var du snakkede om…mad på internettet, du må da være skør, hvordan det ! MEN du brændte så meget igennem overfor mig at jeg simpelthen bare skulle være business partner med dig”…..TÆNK PÅ DIG SELV SOM EN MAGNET…

3. THE GAME OF INCHES

Sikke da en masse fancy engelske udtryk hva… well – nu skal jeg fortælle hvad jeg mener med INCHES. På dansk er det vel ”Det er de små forskelle der betyder noget”. Jeg er sikker på at grunden til Just-Eats success var at der var en masse mennesker som havde en perfektionistisk holdning til tingene og at intet var godt nok førend det var perfekt. Mange vil sikkert sige: ”arrhhh rolig nu, jeg syntes ikke jeres site er perfekt”.

Nej sikkert ikke – men vi er de bedste og vi er kun de bedste hvis vi ikke går på kompromis med noget som helst.

Jeg lyver ikke hvis jeg siger at jeg mere eller mindre sov på kontoret de første 3 år – no shit – jeg sov endda på en Coca-Cola madras jeg havde fået sponseret. Jeg levede og åndede for Just-Eat og arbejdede fra kl. 9 om morgenen til kl. 21-23 hver aften. I weekenden delte vi customer care tjansen, for vi havde ikke råd til at ansætte nogle til at tage sig af det. Det var hårdt men det var fandme også sjovt.

Jeg blev VED med at presse mig selv – en god ide er at bruge 10 min. Hver aften inden du går iseng på at skrive din egen personlige dags rapport med alle de ACTIONS som du har foretaget iløbet af dagen. Kun ACTIONS, for ”slesk tale og billig portvin” kommer dit selskab ingen vegne med. Det jeg fandt ud af med mig selv var, at jeg fik dårlig samvittighed hvis jeg PÅ SKRIFT kunne konstatere at det var småt med ACTIONS den pågældende dag, som igen betød at jeg den næste dag gav den endnu mere gas og skabte mange flere ACTIONS – og det gentager sig så dag for dag.

En optimal iværksætter DNA har evnen til at presse sig selv og holde sig selv kørrende i et gear som ingen andre kan være med i – hvorfor ? fordi en optimal iværksætter DNA ved, at de små forskelle tæller – THE GAME OF INCHES.

Jeg tror på at hvis man VIRKELIGT vil frem her i verden så skal man bruge 70 timer om ugen de første 3 år, ”one inch at a time” – det er simpelthen nødvendigt for ellers gør du ikke en forskel her i verden og du vil blive overhalet af konkurrenter, det kan vi ikke have vel ☺

There are already over 6,000 restaurants in the Just-Eat network, with close to 3,000 in the UK alone. More than one million meals are ordered per month throughout Europe.
